OVERVIEW OF COAL MINING IN SA
SA Coal reserves are ranked amongst the 10th largest in the world. The country’s economy is extremely dependent on coal fired power production which provides almost three quarters of total primary energy.
Mining Method: With a total annual production of > 250 MT and approximately > 50% is mined by underground methods (Chamber of Mines of SA). Of the underground production approximately 80% is mined by methods which rely on some form of roof support systems.
Since 1999: - 2232 cases were investigated by National Institute of Occ Safety and Health in 884 Mines. In South African coal mines, roof fall fatalities accounts for 25% of annual fatalities, 37% of them is attributed to joint system failure and 27% due to excessive spacing.
